I’m no one’s Hero.

I was responsible for the emotional safety, physical well-being, and financial security for another person and their life. Someone that was not my child.

The expectations and pressure destroyed me. It won’t happen again.

Moving forward I will be a safe person to be with, I will care about their well-being, and I will do my part to build a secure functioning relationship.

But I will not be their Hero.

If they make a mistake, I will stand with them. If they are scared, I will hold their hand. If they need encouragement, I will be their cheerleader.

But I will not be their Hero.

I will talk to them and listen to them like they are someone I love. I will greet their pain with empathy. I will meet their anger with compassion. When they are vulnerable and take a risk, embrace the uncertainty, and are open I will treat it with generosity.

But I will not be their Hero.

I will not be sarcastic, contemptful, critical, shaming or judgmental. I will not shut down, disappear, or hide. I will not make their pain mine. I will own what is mine. I will do better.

But I will not be their Hero.

I will fail. I will fall short. I will disappoint them. I will make mistakes. I will hurt them. I will be human.

Because I am not Superman.

I will be their friend and Partner. That is all I wanted.
